Kuhnelo Inc.

The Researcher's Toolkit
Co-founded and led by Bruce Tsai

Kuhnelo (pronounced as Kuhn-elo) was conceived as a researcher's toolkit, containing every tool one would need for research, all in one place. Because I had to juggle too many individual pieces of software that are poorly integrated with each other (ever had to rerun Biber twenty times only to realize there was a weird unicode in the .bib file?). So, me and my buddy decided to build something that's a one-stop toolkit with all the tools that work with each other (and better).

Kuhnelo addresses the fundamental problem of research workflow fragmentation. Researchers currently must navigate between multiple poorly integrated software platforms, leading to inefficiencies, data loss, and workflow disruptions. Our platform provides a comprehensive, integrated solution for the entire research lifecycle.

The platform is available at kuhnelo.com and offers free access to get started.

1. What tools, you may ask?

The Kuhnelo platform consists of four primary components:

1.1 Search

We built our own vector-graph search algorithm on a database containing over 100m pieces of scientific literature. Why? Because Google Scholar/insert-your-choice-of-search still relies on either a mix of keyword or semantic search to find you results. Which works ok, but not great, and we figured we could do better by adding in weighted graphs and context.

1.2 Citation Manager/Library

If you like what you found, you'll need to save it somewhere. Somewhere which you can easily partition for individual projects, share them with coauthors and RAs etc. Zotero got close, but not really lighting the cigar here. We built this one too.

1.3 Individualized Recommender

It's hard to keep track if you got the latest updates/scooped in the latest journal publications on your half-baked project that you've been writing for the last 6 months. It's a lot easier if you have a nice little robot (or agent) to check for you based on your project library.

1.4 Nagging-as-a-service (NaaS)

Writing a paper for a conference 8 months away? Worried you lose track of progress? Don't worry, we will gladly nag you 2 months out that you haven't progressed beyond literature review. That will be $10/month*, thank you very much.

2. Technical Specifications

Our search functionality utilizes a proprietary vector-graph search algorithm operating on a graph database we created, containing over 100 million pieces of scientific literature. We blend weighted graphs with traditional keyword and semantic search methods. Our design philosophy is that meaning alone is insufficient for good quality search, and putting it in the context of relationships within a graph would dramatically improve results.

Each library of the citation manager has its personalized recommender that takes into context your existing collection to track relevant publications and developments, providing you a monthly update.

3. Pricing Structure

Basic access to the platform is provided free of charge. The Nagging-as-a-service (NaaS) feature is available for $10/month*, which includes extending recommender and library features to multiple projects and access to all beta features.

*Note: Pricing includes extending recommender and library features to multiple projects and all our beta features. We're not that evil.

4. Etymology and Design Philosophy

Kuhnelo is named after the Kuhn-Munkres algorithm and the Elo rating from chess, which was the design philosophy behind one of the key algorithms in Kuhnelo (not going to tell you where because that's the secret sauce).
